The history is not incidental here, it is why the town is laid out the way it is. Taylorsville took heavy flood damage in 1935, 1937, 1939, 1943, and 1945. Residents lobbied Washington directly, and in the 1940s they formed the Spencer County Levee Flood Control and Drainage District No. 1.

The Taylorsville Lake dam, completed by the Army Corps of Engineers and filled in 1983, tamed the worst of it. Spencer County is direct about what that did and did not solve: flooding still occurs, particularly near the Brashears Creek confluence at Taylorsville. If your property is in that corridor, the risk was reduced, not removed.
